A subwoofer is the best speaker for bass. Since its introduction in 2012, the Sonos Sub has been a popular upgrade for Sonos systems. Because of its global popularity, the Sonos Sub is probably the most popular subwoofer in the world. Why is bass so popular? It’s simple. More bass equals more enjoyment.
While many Sonos speakers can provide bass that is usable on their own, a subwoofer is needed to produce the deep bass tones. These are the ones you can feel and hear. Subwoofers are the most powerful and reliable subwoofers. They can be used to add an additional dimension to music, such as when there is an explosion, an earthquake, or gunshots.
Sonos Sub Gen 3
With the exception of minor cosmetic adjustments, the sonos sub gen 3 is almost identical to its predecessors. The Sonos Sub’s size, shape, and construction principle all remain the same. According to the manufacturer, there is no difference in sound quality or performance.
The main differences are found inside: the new Sonos sub is faster and has more internal memory than the predecessors. This will allow it to be more open to future upgrades and new features.
Pairs of these can be used
The Sub Gen 3’s most exciting new feature is the ability to add a subwoofer to the room. This is something bass-loving Sonos fans have wanted for years. You can combine this feature with an older Sonos Sub, so you only need to have one Sub of the 3rd generation.
We tested the Sonos sub in both smaller systems with Sonos One SL, Beam and Arc as well as larger systems that included Arc and Play 5 / Fives. We also tested the sub with the predecessor Sonos Sub Gen. 2 and alone. Are there any differences between the new model and the older? And, last but not least, will two subwoofers produce better sound than one? Let’s find out!
It is easy to set up
The Sonos sub compact unit is lightweight and easy to transport. You can mount it upright or lay it flat under your sofa. An extra bracket can be purchased to mount the sofa on the wall.
It’s very easy to set up: If you already use Sonos, simply plug in the power and open the Sonos App to add the subwoofer.
It is important to note that the Sub Gen 3 interface is only compatible the the S2 interface by Sonos. This means that it will not work with products which require control with the older S1 app.
It is very easy to connect the second subwoofer after you have installed a Sub Gen 3. The system will treat them as one subwoofer. You can disconnect one or both, but volume and volume adjustments must be made. They become one and the same. We would like to be able to make individual adjustments.
Sonos Trueplay room correction is the best option. The room correction must be done again when adding a Sub. The system can measure frequency response by moving the mobile about the room and adjust the sound accordingly.
Trueplay is currently only compatible with certain iPhone models. If you’re an Android user, it will be necessary to borrow an iPhone from someone you know. Trueplay offers a noticeable improvement on sound quality, so this is a good idea.
A soundbar is the best way to improve your TV’s sound quality. If you want to make the most of your TV’s soundbar, you should add a subwoofer. This will allow you to produce the deepest bass tones. Only then can things really get moving!
From previous testing, we have had positive experiences with the Sonos sub. It cannot be compared with the “full-size” bass monsters of SVS, Velodyne, or Arendal Sound. It is a powerful instrument, despite its small size.
The bass is tight and precise while being relatively deep in frequency. The device can be played loudly without any distortion or fluttering. Its construction with the two basses against each other helps reduce unwanted resonances. We can even place a glass water on top of it, even at full pressure. The deep bass frequencies will cause a jingle in the room from any movables or cupboards.
The Sonos Beam compact soundbar offers extra benefits in the bass. It’s a costly upgrade. A subwoofer that costs half the price of a Sonos Beam soundbar can seem intimidating. It makes a huge difference! It takes on a new dimension in film sound: it drones when it needs to, and sound effects take on a physical aspect.
Sonos’ sub can also be used as a companion to Arc which is the largest soundbar Sonos makes. The Arc can provide usable bass by itself, but it cannot compete with the subwoofer for deep frequencies.
We also noticed a significant improvement in the sound quality, especially in the midrange and treble. The soundbar doesn’t have to play the lowest notes, so it can reproduce more of the sound mix including Atmos effects.
Geir Grabein nordby, my colleague, has used the Sonos Arc to test long-term without adding a subwoofer. He was able to acknowledge the significant difference. “Blimey! “Blimey! Geir says that although the Arc is a great sounding system on its own, it needs the support of a subwoofer.
Double Sonos bass!
We were excited to introduce Sub number 2 into the system. It can be overwhelming to use two subwoofers. In many cases, this will be true as well. Even a single Sub can deliver plenty of bass.
Our experience is that an additional subwoofer can make a room sound better. We were able achieve better bass distribution by strategically placing subwoofers in different areas of the room. The subwoofers were placed in the corners of the room in front of each other. This immediately created a more consistent frequency response.
The extra subwoofer inserts result in a bass reproduction that is significantly bigger, more powerful, and harder hitting. Even more remarkable is the fact that the bass feels firmer in the flesh. Big drums sound tighter and pumping synth bass rhythms are even more so. The space is filled with deep organ sounds in a totally different way.
We also notice that the bass is much more evenly distributed. The bass can be moved around on the sofa without changing its character.
A subwoofer can also make movies sound better: Star Trek: Odyssey’s Enterprise travels at warp speed, and it feels as if all of space is being filled with a pressure wave. Subwoofers don’t cause vibrations to floors, windows or other movables. This is an amazing combination.
You can also experiment with different locations using two subwoofers. We were able to get a great response from the corner placements in the front. However, a subwoofer placed in the front or a listening position in the rear can also give excellent results. It was common to notice that the bass fills more space and is harder for people to find.
In a small listening area with Beam or smaller Sonos speakers, a dual Sub setup is definitely unnecessary. We would rather upgrade the surround or front speakers first.
If you are looking for a way to add powerful, deep bass to large spaces with two subwoofers, then this is the best option.
A double Sub solution can cost you PS699 per unit. You can start with one Sub and upgrade later. You can also find the second subwoofer on the used market, as only one needs to be the most recent generation.
For Sonos owners who are looking for deep bass, the Sonos Sub is the best and most logical choice. It is an ideal companion for soundbars like Arc, Playbar or Beam.
In terms of sound quality, the 3rd generation Sonos Sub is very similar to previous models. If you have an older Sonos Sub, it’s not worth replacing. It is smarter to keep your older Sonos Sub if you love bass more.
We think the most exciting thing about the third generation is the possibility to add an additional subwoofer, which will allow for even more precise and better bass. The Sonos Sub provides good quality, full-bodied bass. You can play it louder but the best thing about the 3rd generation is the smoother frequency response. This results in tighter and more precise bass.
